Three people. One very long travel list.

Roads of Adventure is a family project. The three of us travel, keep every ticket, note the time we walked into each place, and turn that into the guide we wanted before we went.

Georgi, Viliana and Deya.

We are Georgi and Viliana, and our daughter Deya. We live in Varna, on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, which is where every trip on this site gets planned. Most of them start with a drive to Bucharest rather than a flight from home, because that is where the routes and the fares are — a detail worth knowing if you are reading our costs from somewhere with a bigger airport on the doorstep. It began in 2018 with a few days in Rome, when there were still only two of us, and we have been adding countries to the list ever since.

There have been three of us for most of the trips on this site. Deya is four now. She turned one on a plane, somewhere over central Europe on the way home from Vienna, and she has come along on nearly everything since — which is quietly the reason these itineraries are built around real days rather than ideal ones.

Our year has a shape to it by now. Summer is Greece, always, and for longer: Halkidiki, Thasos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Crete, Santorini, Milos, Koufonisia and Naxos so far, with Thessaloniki, Parga and Meteora on the mainland. Christmas is spent at home with our families, and then we leave again to see the New Year in somewhere else — Andalusia one winter, Morocco the next. The months in between are for shorter trips: London, Paris, Budapest, Vienna, Barcelona, Dubai, Bucharest, Istanbul, Venice, and the slower roads through Puglia and Sardinia. Closer to home, a good share of our weekends go to the small towns on Bulgaria's southern coast — Sozopol and Sinemorets.

We kept building the same spreadsheet for every trip — opening hours, booking windows, what each thing actually costs, the order that makes the days work — and eventually realised that nobody publishes the thing we were already making. So we started publishing it. Roads of Adventure is that spreadsheet written out in full: the trip as we planned it, as we walked it, and as we would do it differently next time.

What we promise

What you can rely on here

1

Real trip costs

What we paid, next to what the same thing costs now — both dated, never blended into one number.

2

Before you go

When to book, opening hours and a link to the official website for most of the places. If a place has no official source, we tell you.

3

Routes that work

Orders that cut backtracking, worked out on the ground rather than on a map.

4

Honest family notes

What worked with a small child, what did not, and what we would change next time.

Method

How a guide gets made

Every guide comes from a trip we actually took. There is no destination on this site we have not walked.

Prices come off our own tickets, dated, and sit next to what the same ticket costs now — never blended into one number. Opening hours are checked against the official source, and where no official page exists we say so rather than repeat a guess. The hour we recommend for each place is read off the timestamp on our own photographs.

If we did not go inside, the guide says so. Nothing on this site describes a room we never stood in.

Corrections

Something out of date?

Prices change and opening hours too. If you find something on this site that is no longer right, tell us and we will check it against the official source and date the correction.
